Day 6:
Nymeria and Mackintosh acquired Large weapons. Nymeria can wield them as a half-giant, and we are allowing Mackintosh to wield them as part of the Titan Mauler barbarian archetype, even though the rules, read strictly, don’t support it.
The party decided to pursue the threat at Thistletop. Their Knowledge (local) was sufficient to point them in the right direction, but as they left town to the east, they encountered a harried merchant telling a tale of woe. He had been attacked by goblins on the road, and his wagon was ransacked. More important than the trade goods he was carrying, though, was the heavy warhorse he was to deliver to a Magnimar noble. From the description of the events, the party determined that the Thistletop goblins were likely to blame. The merchant showed them the site of the raid, which occurred just west of the bridge over the Thistle River, south of the Nettlewood, close to Thistletop. The merchant promised a reward for the return of the horse.
The party found a trail leading through the Nettlewood, which soon became entangled with briars and nettles. The party’s survival skills identified evidence of a large creature having been dragged through the wood. Survival and Knowledge (nature) allowed the party to avoid being inconvenienced by the noxious plant life.
Before long, the party began to hear crashing waves and smell salt in the air. The coast was close. The trail through the Nettlewood led into a thick tangle of briars which nonetheless had the look of being heavily trafficked, resulting a hedge maze of sorts. The party begain exploring the area.
Several unmanned guard towers were visible from multiple locations in the maze, but it was not clear why they would have been unmanned. In the northwest part of the area were a group of goblin captives from the Birdcrunch tribe. They were arguing amongst themselves when the party arrived, but attacked them on sight, in hopes of currying favor with Warchief Ripnugget, their captor. The party dispatched them handily.
Next, the party discovered a hole in the ground about 80 feet deep with ocean water at the bottom. This hole led to an underground chamber with outlets to the sea. As evidenced by the piles of remains underwater at the bottom of the hole, this was a place where some unlucky goblins and some larger humanoids either fell or were dumped. Nymeria climbed down a rope to investigate the remains, and noticed shiny treasures mixed in with the garbage, along with a hungry aquatic beast roaring hungrily. Mackintosh and some of the others also climbed down the hole to help, but the creature was slain before it could deal serious damage. The treasure included several weapons and armors, gems, magic wands, and assorted loose coins which will be enumerated later. After everyone climbed back to safety, exploration of the hedge maze resumed.
The next encounter was a pack of goblin dogs which also wasted no time in showing their aggressive tendencies. The party was carving them to bits when they saw a firepelt cougar join the fray, and heard the familiar sound of spellcasting. Oz noticed the goblin casting a spell, and acted immediately to interrupt him. The goblin druid failed to channel his spell, thereby sparing the party the terrible effect of call lightning. The party made mincemeat of the firepelt cougar and the remaining goblin dogs, and the goblin druid fled through the brambles using his woodland stride ability.
However, as elusive as he was, Wanga was easily his match with his own woodland stride, and the goblin Gogmurt pled for his pathetic life. He claimed to be loyal to the Thistletop goblins, but in opposition to Warchief Ripnugget, who had been in league with the longshanks to cause problems for the citizens of Sandpoint. The party was clear evidence that raids on Sandpoint beyond normal goblin mischief would result in retribution upon Thistletop, which was one of Gogmurt’s main points of contention with Ripnugget’s rule. The party agreed to depose Ripnugget for Gogmurt, sparing the other goblins’ lives, with the promise that under Gogmurt’s leadership, the Thistletop goblins would end their raids and other orchestrated aggression against Sandpoint. Gogmurt then spread word of the coup throughout the goblin ranks in preparation for the party’s raid. The party smeared red grease on their faces so that the goblins would know they were working with Gogmurt.

The party crossed the bridge to Thistletop proper, and encountered goblins who acknowledged them as Gogmurt promised. The party burst into Ripnugget’s throne room, where he lurked with several loyalists and his gecko mount Stickfoot. One of the loyalists began inspiring courage for his compatriots while Ripnugget mounted up and ran along the walls and ceiling to gain the benefits of a mounted charge. For all the tactical advantage a wall-walking charging mount should have provided, Stickfoot was not very durable, and he collapse after a few blows. Hildabrandt disarmed Ripnugget of his weapon with a well-placed truestrike spell, and it was all over but the crying.
Gogmurt rewarded the party with a few choice selections from Ripnugget’s treasure room, showed them where the battered warhorse was being kept, and let them rest in the chief’s bedroom for the night. He also showed them the stairways leading down into the lower levels where Nualia and her minions resided. Gogmurt indicated that the party could expect to find a bugbear, a human warrior, a female spellcaster, and the wayward aasimar herself, Nualia, along with some monstrous creatures he didn’t know much about.
TL;DR:
The party removed Warchief Ripnugget from power at Thistletop, effectively clearing out everything above ground. They spared the life of the goblin druid Gogmurt, and installed him in power with the promise that the Thistletop goblin tribe would cease their organized attacks on Sandpoint. The Thistletop dungeon has yet to be dealt with.
